Instrument-Assisted
Myofascial Release Technique – IASTM

What is it?

Instrument-Assisted Myofascial Release (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation – IASTM) is a specialist approach to mobilizing soft tissues — muscles and fascia. It helps physiotherapists locate restrictions and release adhesions. The surgical stainless-steel instruments have concave and convex surfaces with rounded edges, allowing them to follow the contours of any part of the body.
We use different friction techniques to create hyperaemia and controlled microtrauma. This aims to trigger a local inflammatory response, increasing the rate and volume of blood flow in and around the affected area to enhance soft tissue healing. Treatment follows the kinetic chain. A patient with back pain may therefore also receive treatment to the hip flexors, abdomen, hamstrings, shoulders or other areas that seem distant but are linked through the fascial network.

What are the benefits?

Instrument-Assisted Myofascial Release has a high success rate in reducing pain and improving function after soft tissue injuries that cause acute and chronic pain. It enhances collagen production, restores proper mobility, reduces inflammation and shortens recovery. Applications include musculoskeletal and sports conditions such as elbow epicondylitis, thumb tenosynovitis, Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, hamstring strains, iliotibial band syndrome, ankle sprains, muscle imbalances, restricted range of movement and postoperative conditions.
