Therapeutic Exercise
What is it?
Therapeutic exercise is central to physiotherapy. A physiotherapist prescribes specific exercises to correct dysfunctions, restore the body’s function and/or maintain wellbeing. Assessment records movement patterns, movement dysfunction, load-related dysfunction, muscle imbalances, weakness, endurance, lack of flexibility and joint restrictions. We use motor control tests, functional tests and performance tests, alongside valid, reliable measurement tools such as the FMS (Functional Movement Screen), dynamometers and force plates. For athletes, assessment reflects their sport and rehabilitation stage. The findings and measurements guide an individualised therapeutic exercise programme.
What are the benefits?
The scientific evidence demonstrating the beneficial effects of exercise is indisputable. Therapeutic exercise reduces pain and eliminates symptoms, improves movement patterns and techniques, corrects muscle imbalances, increases strength and endurance, improves balance and neuromuscular coordination, increases flexibility and range of movement, enhances performance and restores function in everyday, recreational and sporting activities.
After the first phase of rehabilitation reduces symptoms, a second phase helps maintain the results and prevent reinjury.
This second phase is an innovative part of rehabilitation in Greece. After the first phase, each patient joins an individual or group therapeutic exercise programme. Individual sessions last 30 or 50 minutes; group sessions last 50 minutes, with no more than 4 participants. Our therapeutic exercise programmes follow 8 different pathways.
1.The first pathway, TherapySpine, provides general body strengthening with a focus on stabilisation exercises for spinal conditions and injuries.
5. The fifth pathway, TherapyFalls, focuses on improving balance and overall strength in older adults to improve quality of life and prevent falls.
2.The second pathway, TherapyArm, provides general body strengthening with a focus on increasing muscle mass, proprioception and motor control of the upper limbs.
6. The sixth pathway, TherapyPreg, focuses on therapeutic exercise during pregnancy, helping women adapt better to physiological changes during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
3.The third pathway, TherapyLeg, provides general body strengthening with a focus on increasing muscle mass, proprioception and motor control of the lower limbs.
7.The seventh pathway, TherapyNeuro, focuses on therapeutic exercise for neurological and autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and others.
4. The fourth pathway, TherapyAthlets, focuses on injury prevention and return to sport for football and volleyball players.
8. Finally, the eighth pathway, TherapyOsteo, focuses on therapeutic exercise for metabolic conditions such as osteoporosis.

Highly qualified physiotherapists lead the strengthening work in our therapeutic exercise programmes, minimising the likelihood of relapse or recurrent injury. We use innovative equipment including Reformer, TRX, RIP, Pilates mats, balance platforms and Virtual Games, with resistance from body weight, dumbbells and weighted vests. Our in-depth knowledge of anatomy, programmes continually adapted to World Health Organization (WHO) guidance, and the expertise of our clinical lead, Dr Georgios Tsatsakos, set us apart from other exercise providers.
