THERAPYOSTEO
Preventing and reducing bone loss.
Osteoporosis is a skeletal condition whose name literally means porous bone. Bone is living tissue that is continually broken down and regenerated. Osteoporosis occurs when the formation of new bone does not keep pace with the loss of old bone, leading to reduced bone density. Bones can become so fragile that a fall, or even strain from vigorous coughing or bending, may cause a fracture in an affected, weakened area such as the spine, wrist or hip.
WHO IT IS FOR AND WHEN IT CAN HELP
Osteoporosis commonly affects women, particularly after menopause, but also affects men. Its various causes include long-term cortisone use, hormonal disorders, family history, poor diet, smoking, alcohol and lack of exercise. Medication, a healthy diet and weight training can help prevent bone loss and strengthen already weakened bones.
Therapeutic exercise and physical activity have been shown to play an important role in increasing bone density and muscle strength. This is why we created the TherapyOsteo pathway.
WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE, AND WHY IS IT SUITABLE FOR YOU?
Your physiotherapist takes a medical history and performs a physical examination to understand your clinical presentation, then plans a personalised TherapyOsteo therapeutic exercise programme around your needs. Clear goals guide the choice of exercises. We continually develop and update the treatment plan to help you complete the programme and get the greatest possible benefit.
Strengthening, weight-bearing and balance exercises build the muscles that stabilise and support the joints. High-load exercises are a particular focus for improving bone density. We also advise on ergonomics at work and during hobbies, improving sporting techniques to prevent injury, and developing fitness. Therapeutic exercise helps whenever you begin, with the greatest benefits from a comprehensive programme of 2–3 sessions a week.
