ΤHERAPYFALL

For Strengthening and Falls Prevention in Older Adults.

Therapeutic exercise and regular physical activity are important for health in later life and beneficial in managing chronic illnesses.

WHEN DOES IT HELP?

Keeping muscles active, helps older people improve balance and avoid falls. Therapeutic exercise has been shown to reduce the incidence of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers and diabetes, and help prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and associated fractures. It also reduces complications of immobility, prevents falls and accidents, slows or even reverses age-related muscle loss, improves mental and cognitive function, reduces anxiety and builds confidence.

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE, AND WHY IS IT SUITABLE FOR YOU?

In TherapyFall, our therapeutic exercise pathway for older adults, we prescribe exercise based on each person’s health and functional ability.

We set achievable goals, identify deficits and possible solutions, and advise on the type, frequency and intensity of exercise. We also help each participant choose activities that suit their interests and abilities. Resistance exercises to improve strength, endurance, flexibility and balance are a particular focus.

WHICH METHODS AND TOOLS DO WE USE TO ACHIEVE OUR GOAL?

In the TherapyFall pathway, we provide an individualised programme delivered one-to-one or in a small group, combining different therapeutic exercise methods: the Otago programme for falls prevention and improved strength and balance; body-weight exercises on a mat using small equipment such as weights, balance discs and resistance bands; Clinical Pilates exercises on the mat and Reformer; and functional exercises to support a return to everyday activities.

With our support and guidance, older people can improve their quality of life and functional ability. A more active lifestyle makes everyday life easier.
