THERAPYATHLETES
For Return to Sport.
Taking part in sport is associated with better quality of life, fewer instances of various conditions and better cardiorespiratory health. Individualised therapeutic exercise helps patients return gradually and safely to everyday activities and sport.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Professional athletes in individual or team sports, and people who participate regularly in sporting activities, see physical changes such as reduced body fat and increased power, muscle strength and endurance; psychological changes such as reduced anxiety and increased confidence; and improvements in social skills such as teamwork, fair play and responsibility.
Sport brings health benefits, but also a risk of injury. Sports injuries affect all ages and sexes across different sports. They can result from acute trauma or from overuse and repeated loading of the upper limbs, lower limbs or spine.
WHEN DOES IT HELP?
Common sports injuries we treat in the lower limbs include meniscal and cruciate ligament tears, medial or lateral collateral ligament tears, quadriceps strains, hip bursitis, adductor strains, hamstring strains, athletic pubalgia, iliotibial band syndrome, runner’s knee, toe stress fractures, Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis and foot sprains. Upper limb conditions include rotator cuff tendinopathy, biceps tendinitis, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome. Spinal conditions include lower back pain, lower back pain with sciatica, spondylolisthesis and spinal injuries caused by falls.
WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE, AND WHY IS IT SUITABLE FOR YOU?
In the TherapyAthletes therapeutic exercise pathway, athletes are assessed through functional mobility and performance tests. At TherapyLab physiotherapy clinics, we use specialist assessment systems, including the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Performance Stability Screening, to identify weak links in each body region that may have influenced or caused the injury.
The sports physiotherapist uses the sports assessment results and specialised treatment protocols to create an individualised therapeutic exercise plan. They review, progress and adapt it regularly to meet the athlete’s needs.
WHICH METHODS AND TOOLS DO WE USE TO ACHIEVE OUR GOAL?
In the TherapyAthletes pathway, we use a variety of equipment and exercise methods: Functional Training, Clinical Suspension Training, Clinical Pilates with small equipment and Reformer, strength machines, dumbbells, weights, hurdles, trampolines, box steps, balance and proprioception equipment, Microfet, Blazepod and more.
Corrective, individualised therapeutic exercise makes an important contribution to preventing reinjury and other sports injuries. We work towards the fastest possible comprehensive rehabilitation, with the goal of restoring the athlete’s pre-injury fitness and performance.
